@JonHuntsman: “To be clear. I believe in evolution and trust scientists on global warming. Call me crazy.”
We almost missed this tweet yesterday from GOP presidential candidate John Huntsman, perhaps the most moderate of any Republicans vying for the White House and a former ambassador in the Obama Administration. Funny man, that Huntsman. But it is, of course, rather sad that a politician would even have to admit that maybe America, most advanced country in the world, should probably leave science to the scientists. And even sadder considering the political risk in Republican circles these days of making such an admission.
But on the upside, it may be the start of a tide-turning. Perhaps we’re nearing the end of the era of mindless and uninformed denialism and into a new epoch in which we can all agree we have a problem and move onto the debate about how to solve it.
Which is all to say, this tweet tritely sums up why John Huntsman would probably make a decent president: he’s thorough, willing to make politically unpopular choices and doesn’t portend to be all knowing. And at the very same time, a sobering summary of why he’ll probably never get his party’s nomination.
